About the Institute

Vision

Using research and knowledge advancement to promote, protect, improve, and sustain the health of people and the ecosystem in Calgary, Alberta, and Canada and around the world.

Mission

To be the hub and catalyst for population and public health and health systems and services research at the University of Calgary and in the Province of Alberta.

This mission will be achieved by:

  • Creating a centre of excellence in population and public health that focuses on research and also supports education and professional practice through innovative insights and approaches;
  • Developing a creative and sustainable capacity in population and public health research by linking and integrating the skills, knowledge, and capacities of researchers, students, and practitioners with the needs of society; and
  • Generating relevant research products that are communicated in timely and effective ways to inform public policy and service delivery decisions. 

 

The Institute for Public Health is a partnership between the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine and Alberta Health Services.

The Institute has over 275 members, representing a wide range of disciplines and roles in Pillar III (Health Services) and Pillar IV (Population and Public Health) research, policy-making and practice. Organizational affiliations of our members are primarily to the University of Calgary (47%) and Alberta Health Services (25%), with 19% of members holding joint University - AHS appointments and 9% representing government and community organizations.

By joining the Institute, our members have indicated their intent to contribute a broad agenda of research, education, knowledge translation and community engagement that will have a positive impact on the health and well-being of the people of Calgary, Alberta, and Canada.
